End of January 2008: ”This game is complete bollocks, why the fuck has this received such glowing reviews when all I can see is a bloody Shooter/RPG fudge, and how are you supposed to install all these weapons mods I keep getting?!”
Start of December 2008: “Alright then, I suppose I’d better finish this one off before the next slew of games arrive on Xmas day.”
And so began my journey into the Mass Effect. With such an inauspicious start and low expectations form earlier in the year I was suddenly overwhelmed by my new-found love of a game I had so easily written off as clunky and boring... I know, blasphemy! The incredible graphics brought the characters to textureless life and the conversations began to suck me in, I wanted to know more about the Turian-Human war, more about the myriad of species and charachers wandering around in this enormous space station and most of all I wanted to make sure I did everything right so I would get to bone the blue chick!
My journey around the Universe was not always smooth, with seemingly endless elevator rides, irritating space navigation system and sometimes less than brilliant combat being a few of my personal pet hates.
But enough of the bad and onto the good. The conversations, oh my god, these are truly awesome, the voicing of the characters is flawless and the fact that you can mould Shepard in your own mould (albeit a gruff space marine with cropped hair mould) is truly fantastic! Once you figure out the use of weapon mods you can spend ages fiddling with your setup to find your own perfect balance, overheating mega weapon or averagely powerful reliable gun, the choice is yours to make!
While I’m sure most of you will agree with the score at the end, there are some improvements that need to be made for the sequel, improved load times, reduced texture pop-in, less empty expanses on non-story worlds, more enemy types (I got sick to death of Geth and Rachni) and better action sequences.
Final Score: 9.5/10 (I’ve got to leave room for Mass Effect 2)
