Mintz killaz made a good suggestion to me today which as promised i am going to follow up on. This review will deal with the first game in a way to give background to people who may be new to the franchise and who are thinking about picking up BFBC2 which is due out on the 05/03. The first battlefield game was published by EA and developed by DICE and was released back on the 26th of june 2008. So is this the kind of company you want to keep or should you look for something else readon to find out:-
Story
The storyline of Battlefield: Bad Company revolves around a four-man squad of military misfits during a fictional war in the near-future that pits the Russian Federation against the United States. The squad is part of the "B" Company of the 222nd Army battalion, more commonly known as "Bad Company". The company is composed of the insubordinate troublemakers whose use in the battlefield is limited to the role of cannon fodder. "Bad Company" is often sent before Special Forces because they are deemed "expendable". I would say that is all you really need to know for the story all the characters are fun and well written.
Presentation
The game uses the frostbite engine which is an engine built from the ground up within the delevoper DICE. The main selling point of this games presentation is the ability to blow stuff up and whilst it may not be on the same level as the most recent red faction game it is certainly nothing to be overlooked. Most buildings can have holes blown through the walls in effect making most peoples cover not a permanent thing. The game also has some nice lighting effects and the characters and settings all suit the tone of the game.
Sound
Well the sound for this game is well as good as you would expect it to be. If you have played games in the battlefield series then you will know what your in for. Blowing out walls of buildings sounds great whether your in the building or the one blowing it up. The voice acting for the four characters is also a lot better than i thought it would be. What little background music there is in the game is all well suited and fits each level that it is used in. The sound is nothing special but it gets the job done and makes you feel like your part of the action.
Controls
The controls are standard fare if you have played other first person shooter titles and anyone should have no problem picking them up. I had no complaints whilst playing through the single player or the online section of the game.
Gameplay
The gameplay of the game should once again feel familar to anyone that has played a battlefield game before or anyone that has played a standard military shooter to be honest. Each mission will have various objectives that you must complete in order to progress wtih the story. Most of the battles will take place in large wide open spaces so you do have some degree of control over how each battle will play out. However if you do stray too far you will be told to get back to the area you was in within 5 seconds or you will die. If an enemy goes into a building to take cover then you go and destroy that cover its all good fun. What makes the gameplay so fun is that in several sections of the game you will be making your way through a bunch of small enemy filled houses. Whilst you could crawl through a window the fun comes from making your own enterences. Another gameplay element is the ability to take the weapons that the enemies drop or weapons that are in houses. There are a number of different weapons in the game and whilst you may have your personal favourite everyone is sure to find a weapon of choice. You can also plant charges on buildings so all your demolition needs are catered for.
Mulitplayer
The multiplayer mode in Bad Company is called Gold Rush, and it's slightly different from the standard Conquest mode that Battlefield is known for. The teams are assigned to attacker and defender roles. The attacking team has to blow up two gold crates that the defending team must fight to protect. The defenders win if they can drain the attacking team's respawn meter. If the attackers get both gold crates, they earn more respawns and push the defenders back to another set of gold crates, and then another. So if the attackers can push the defenders back and destroy all the crates, they win. If the defenders drain their enemy's respawn meter, they win. The cap for players online is 24 and i feel that it sfelt just about right for the maps that came with the game. There is an experience based system similar to modern warfare 2 which allows you to unlock new weapons, attachments etc. One nice aspect of the online is the ability to drive vehicles on the maps and adds more tactical options for the player. There is also some DLC for the game which adds a conquest mode and some new maps as well. I will be honest i died a lot in the game as with most battlefield games the online has a certain feel for it that if you can get into you will really enjoy.
Final Thoughts
I really enjoyed my time with this game the characters were well written and fun to be around. The destruction kicks ass even if the enemy AI can be a bit all over the place at times. Dice have managed to mold a good story with great destruction so i ask you what more do you need. Also with BFBC2 coming out it may be useful to play this one so you get a better idea of the characters.
