This has got to be the most anticipated beat ?em up for a while. Even more so than the recent Soul Calibur release. Here it is buzzing away inside my 360 and I feel all giddy. I loved MK when it was first released, and on the consoles I would take it over Street Fighter 2 any day.
This new version takes Mortal Kombat and infuses it with the DC Universe of super heroes and villains. Oh, and the UK/Pal version is uncut. The US get a sanitised version. Something to do with selling more units I think. I don?t really know.
So, on with the review. First thing I did was take it into a single player game. You choose your character then fight a mix of the MK/DC characters or just focus on one ?brand?. Pretty much the same as MK releases in the past. The graphics are just so crisp and smooth with so many neat touches. This is one good looking fighter!! The moves for each character work well, with the MK characters, along with the DC Villans having ?Fatalities?, and the DC Heroes ?Heroic Brutatlities?. These moves don?t kill their opponent, just gives them an extra hiding!
The story mode is just that. You watch a few cut scenes and have a few fights. The thing is, you can?t skip the cut scenes either. I did think this mode did drag but it does really explain why this is all happening!! There is also a ?Kombo Challenge?. You pick a character and you have to do the moves listed on the screen. It does help you play the game, so pick your favourite character and dive in.
The big question though is: does it work?? Do the characters gel?? I think it does indeed work. The MK characters as ever are great. The addition of the DC Comics heroes and villains adds so much more to this game enough even to please DC Comics fans. The characters come straight from the page to the screen capturing all their super powers and, in the case of some of the villains, their devices of mayhem!!
On LIVE I seemed to have a few problems. Games would just finish. I?m sure it?s my router so I will update this review once I get that sorted!!
Overall this is a great game. One I think you will be coming back to again and again, especially multiplayer with friends!!
