MW 2 No Russian Level discussion

Played through this last night again with my Parents in attendance, they
were pretty shocked with the content and it sort of got me thinking. I thought it was very VERY bold of IW to tackle subject matter like that and a very important moment for the medium. After looking again i cant help but think IW were going for the shock value and handled it very poorly.
The last thing the industry needs is this kind of reaction to such a massive title.

So far the chapter has been removed from the Russian version, Debated in the House of commons here and has resulted in David Cameron slamming PEGI, the god squad have been rattling their cages and dont get the yanks started.

Whats the communities views on this as the consequences could be very far reaching

Im one of those people who believe that only I can control Me. So lets just start off with saying i think all the 'Games make you go out and commit murder' sayings are total bollocks.

I personally played through it and thought 'meh'. It is just a game and there is a skip option for those who feel morally obligated to some randomly generated ingame people.

There isnt much more i can say really except for the only reason it's getting such a bad reaction is because its interactive, i've never come across it but i'm pretty sure that theres stuff alot worse in some books and movies that'll never get censored. It does really remind of the people who complain about others smoking and they dont realize they dont have to do it and they dont even have to go a smoking individual.

    Bah, Humbug to them all.

To be honest, I haven't really read any of the uproar about this, but I'd be interested to see what people who are against it are saying about it.

I appreciate the level for what it is. Like other moments in the game (are we ok to post spoilers here?), it's just used for emotional impact, and actually fits in quite nicely into an albeit quite crazy storyline.

It's no more violent than anything seen in films, or other games for that matter, but I think because it's presented in a more serious way, it's seen as more horrific.

At the end of the day, it is just a game. You can go through the whole thing without shooting a civilian, just defending yourself against the security, or you can blast everything that moves. They even give you the option to skip it altogether. But that's down to the individual. The developers made the game they wanted to make, and it's your choice whether you play it or not.

Part of me thinks that would be a good idea, to give people the option to lessen the impact a bit (like how Left 4 Dead 2 lets you turn down the gore), and that if people do go genuinely mental over this, then that would be a good rule to put in place, to make the nastier parts optional. But then another part of me thinks that you should just man up if you want to experience the game as the developers intended, and not water down what they were trying to achieve by skipping over parts of it.

From IW's perspective, everyone taking offence and complaining about this level is just making people who haven't already see it want to see what all the fuss is about, therefore just adding to the big MW2 hype machine.

I dont see what all the fuss is all about tbh, its not real life is it. Its bloody polygons and pixels ffs!! I bet half of the people complaining have never even played MW 2 or a video game in their life. Does my head in. Maybe they shouldnt buy 18 rated games for their childern then, im amazed by how many kids there are playing online, its entirely up to the parents if they choose to buy these sort of games for their kids. Should just say no and deal with the crying and moaning. Isnt there a option to not play the level anyways? Plus you get a pretty good warning at the start of the game.

Nobody says that it makes you go out and commit murder.

But it is a bit offensive in my eyes tbh.

    Still a great game though.

I definitly think it could be seen as offensive, just because of the way it is played out and because it really tackles a modern issue: terrorists and airports.

I think the reason it is so shocking is that it is a lot of people's worst nightmare and it seems a very plausible scenario.
Games like GTA and GoW get stick for foul language and excessive gore, neither of which MW2 contains, but I think it's because of the specific scenario IW chose to use that people dislike this part.

I could see what they were trying to do with the airport scene.

Unfortunately they seem to have scheduled that part of the story (the part where you have the option to shoot lots of people in the face) just after you have been shooting countless other people in the face. For hours and hours.

So the execution (forgive the pun) could have been better, but the scene, for me, wasn't offensive.

If they were running around Heathrow instead there would have been uproar over here.

Sure it's bad to shoot civilians, but that in itself is not all that shocking to me.

What I hate more is the fear-mongering news agencies:

Swine flu, bird flu and terrorism. All of these "threats" were at one point or another going to kill us all.

Games and rap-music are turning all children into murderers and psyhopaths. It's just one thing after another:

I just wish the world would chill out...
