Verdict:
So I played for a bit last night. Now, I was a big fan of Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 on the PC back in the day. I know this is an Xbox, but I'm still going to judge the game against my experience with the franchise
For start, I felt the engine looked dated. I've always loved Frostbites exploding walls/ trees/ fences etc. But for a game coming out early 2010 the near-distance textures/graphics aren't very sharp. Things like missle impacts and C4 seemed flat to me. I know Battlefield isn't all about fluid graphics and the maps are of a large scale. But the game is going up against stiff competition on the consoles and I think the 'judge a book by its cover' gamers will let BFBC2 go from a graphics perspective. On a quick note, scenery distance (distant mountains, sky, horizons) items all looked very nice.
Combat was great fun. I mostly roll medic as I like to support advances. I was straight upto the top of the scoreboard with kills and healsit was a lot of fun. I liked the way projectiles act. They seem to have got it right and watching an attack helicopter on a strafing run was just amazing.
Rush mode is quite nice, nothing super different in terms of battlefield, But progressing across the battlefield is quite fun. Similar to say, Rugby or American Football in terms of moving slowly up the pitch or trying to hold off the push.
All in all, I enjoyed playing the demo. Graphically a bit of a disappointment. Gameplay was fun and I can see it getting better in friendship squads and once familiar with the terrain/maps.
This is either a + or - depending on your view point; But I don't think it will pull the COD crowd/kiddies, as they'll just say it doesn't look very good. On the PS3 side of things, shooter fans will go for MAG instead.
Whether BFBC2 is worth RRP is still to be seen. On the strength of the demo, I would only buy the game if a mass of friends were getting it for their next community game. Otherwise, for me persoanlly I don't think I'd rush out and buy it until some reviews start pouring in.
