Please be patient while the world is ending.......
As a tag line for a game it hardly paints a rosey picture does it? Another post apocolyptic trudge through the wastelands? a cynical Fallout clone? Apparently not according to the post E3 reports.
Winning IGN's coveted best of E3 accolade is no small feat and whilst i was interested in this title mainly by virtue of ID's history i was certainly not expecting such a strong response to what looked like a yet another generic bland shooter.
So onto the game...
Rage is ID's first mass large scale project since Doom 3 and aims too put them back on top of the Development tree. Id have always prided themselves on raising graphical bar and Rage is no exception.
The game looks stunning in action switching between the first person action and driving sequences that make up the bulk of the campaign. The game world is interactive and see's you interracting with NPC's who offer quests and buy or sell you weapons. So far so Borderlands.
The shooting sections have been likened more to Half Life and Far cry due to the twitchy nature of the shooting. Your armed with the standard weapon types, shotguns, pistols rocket launcher etc to help kill the multitude of mutated freaks (think Great Yarmouth Radio 1 Road Show type freaks) that run, walk or crawl in your direction like miss Great Yarmouth here
The weapons you have can be upgrade by looting components from bodies all without menu's or inventory's or the need to find a workbench! Using the upgrade system you can create some unique weaponry from spider robots to stationery turrets and lock picking machines.
Too break up the action sequences Rage has a fully kick ass driving component that allows you to compete in races and combat sections as well as travelling from location to location.
The similarities are pretty clear but hopefully the driving sections will help push Rage into its own space away from Fallout and Borderlands. No mention yet of an exact release date but mid next year seems like a solid prediction. The final component will of course be the co op/multiplayer whilst ID have not officially announced either i am sure Co op will be a large part of the experience and given ID's heritage i wouldn't bet against a kick ass MP as well.
Roll on next year some time![]()
