Modern Warfare 3 - Quick Review

Have you played Modern Warfare 2? If you just answered ?yes? then you will know exactly what you?re getting. In fact the first time I booted up the game (I didn?t buy it I just went round a friends to play) I wondered whether Activision were having a laugh at the rest of the worlds expense and had just put copies of MW2 in new boxes and shipped them out the door. From the graphics and gameplay to the menus and unlocks this seems to share approximately 99.99% of its DNA with its predecessor. From my point of view this is a new low for Mr Kotick and Co. in terms of laziness.

The fact that IW lost their best and brightest to EA is abundantly and immediately obvious. Innovation is seriously lacking and the new recruits seem to have been either too scared or too lacking in imagination to try anything new. The graphics have not been overhauled since the original (and great) Call of Duty 4 and the engine is seriously showing its age when placed next to superior specimens such as Frostbite 2 and Unreal 3. Gameplay is much the same as it has always been too, if you?ve ever played a CoD game you will pretty much know how this one handles.

Now don?t get me wrong this is a competent and entertaining game but you could just go and buy MW2 for a few quid and you?d basically be playing the same game. It?s saving grace may be the Spec Ops mode (my favourite part from MW2) I didn?t get a chance to play that and can only hope that (what?s left of) Infinity Ward get behind that mode rather than lazily churning out map packs*.

So to summarise, if you liked enjoyed MW2 then you?ll love this? Because it?s the same game. Don?t be put off but just know what you?re getting!

    * Please note this will probably not happen.

I am all about the campaign. Spec ops was fun at Eurogamer but soon tires like fatboy lampard in the holding role. It should be the last MW title so fingers crossed for a giant overhaul next time around

i went and got my copy in sainsburys this morning for ?28.99. can't wait to have a go at lunch. I never played fps before the 360 and COD4 changed that for me, and i have loved every game since, the thrill of completing 4 on veteran is one of my fav 360 moments. I was still getting used to online multiplayer with mw2 so did struggle but i loved bops.

This looks like it is going to take up many an hour. I'm not sure why there are so many haters, just take the game for what it is and enjoy it. People speak about COD like it is evil and only 12year old kids play it. I know i am in the minority on this site as there are many BF lovers, myself included but as with FIFA COD is my guilty pleasure. I love the pick and play element of it and am really pleased it is more of the same.
    Feisty one you are!

we should be giving cod and fifa a bit more love. There is room for them on here and there must be loads of people yearning for a good environment like this site for them to come to. We need some kind souls to step up and support these games and build a team for them.

Don?t get me wrong, it?s not like it?s a bad game, it?s just the same game as what was released 2 years ago. I?m certain that many millions of people will plough billions of hours into the multiplayer, reaching the upper prestige levels.

I?m also sure that I too will have a go at it sometime once one of my friends gets bored of playing it. It just seems like they?ve squandered that last two years doing god knows what and just released a glorified map pack for MW2 (which is either a good or bad thing depending on your point of view).

FIFA is similar for sure but they do seem to try to refine that gameplay every year. I wonder whether CoD (as a franchise) would be better off working on a subscription based model like the MMO?s do? You pay by the month and get all the updates/map packs/new games included.

As for a FIFA Team. We could give it a go but every time I?ve played Clubs it seems to descend into petty squabbles. There?s something about that game that makes otherwise rational human beings lose their heads.

If there is enough interest we could try and resuscitate the bloated corpse of Club De Futbol Xbox Friends or do some sort of Tournament. After Christmas may be a good time to put some weight behind it as some of the members may be getting it as a present and Battlefield and MW3 may have died down a bit by then.

I think theyve spent most of this year crafting the backend server & the Elite subscription model (free for a year if bought with the hard braincells edition)

Theres now an application on the dashboard & the web that will let you view stats of players, clams & err I dunno, masturbate to various stats.
(Stats included are a basic group for Black Cops, and whatever MW3 is collecting)

Its unlikely to happen, but after this one it should be the end point of the story of Price, Bumlove & other people.. Otherwise its going to get a bit silly(er).

As they like to churn out a new one everyyear (2 year dev time), They could reboot COD4! same story, different character names, Maybe just a slight pallete swap for the graphics..
Maybe even reimagine the games from the beginning again.
(It works for hollywood, so why cant game companies get into the same appallling tactic)

Personally, I cant wait Mass Effect 1 to come out, I hear Captain Farmer is going to fight some aliens in some Action RPG game with new inventory management!
