Have you played Modern Warfare 2? If you just answered ?yes? then you will know exactly what you?re getting. In fact the first time I booted up the game (I didn?t buy it I just went round a friends to play) I wondered whether Activision were having a laugh at the rest of the worlds expense and had just put copies of MW2 in new boxes and shipped them out the door. From the graphics and gameplay to the menus and unlocks this seems to share approximately 99.99% of its DNA with its predecessor. From my point of view this is a new low for Mr Kotick and Co. in terms of laziness.
The fact that IW lost their best and brightest to EA is abundantly and immediately obvious. Innovation is seriously lacking and the new recruits seem to have been either too scared or too lacking in imagination to try anything new. The graphics have not been overhauled since the original (and great) Call of Duty 4 and the engine is seriously showing its age when placed next to superior specimens such as Frostbite 2 and Unreal 3. Gameplay is much the same as it has always been too, if you?ve ever played a CoD game you will pretty much know how this one handles.
Now don?t get me wrong this is a competent and entertaining game but you could just go and buy MW2 for a few quid and you?d basically be playing the same game. It?s saving grace may be the Spec Ops mode (my favourite part from MW2) I didn?t get a chance to play that and can only hope that (what?s left of) Infinity Ward get behind that mode rather than lazily churning out map packs*.
So to summarise, if you liked enjoyed MW2 then you?ll love this? Because it?s the same game. Don?t be put off but just know what you?re getting!
* Please note this will probably not happen.
