WarFace: Crytek's F2P (Free 2 play) Online FPS

Not heard of this yet? Me neither till about 5 minutes ago.

Crytek presents Warface, a free-to-play online game for the PC. Warface is an historical first for Crytek and a company milestone. Developed from scratch and designed especially for this innovative release format, Warface is a showcase for truly next-gen visuals and production values that have so far been witnessed only in full priced retail games.

?With Warface we aim to become the next-gen of free to play shooters that are on par with traditional AAA games in terms of quality. We have the team and technology to make it happen and are starting with strong partners in Asia to ensure we gain experience with the free to play business model?, said Cevat Yerli, CEO & President of Crytek. ?It?s the next logical step for us to bring this new IP to a global audience and thus to our worldwide community.?

Sure its PC only but what are the chances of this F2P model becoming popular on consoles? Hell Warface may even make it to our humble xbox.

What's in it for them? Is it a case of "free but buy this super weapon for ?10" etc?

I will have a more detailed look at it tonight but it does look cool!

a lot of F2P games end up like that... but look at TF2 on the PC, thats now F2P but people spend thousands on trying to get fucking hats and new items. it doesnt make you more powerful though, its just variety. it could work but in actuality probably wont

Games like this do run the risk of being not much more than a playable demo if they hold too much content back but I imagine if they get it right they can get it really right, I think with everyone pinching pennies etc we could see a few more games launch like this!

I'm looking forward to the next game in the series, an innovative First Person Drinker where you go on the pub crawl to end them all, I think it's called ShitFaced.

I'll be honest, I've never quite got how F2P games actually make money, apart from the microtransactions thing but I thought that wouldn't really make enough to cover operational costs - maybe it'll only come with 3 maps and you have to pay to access the others?

well, say 20% of people who play it like it, on average. if it was ?40 to buy, not many people would buy it and only 20% of them will like it anyway. if its free, millions of folk will try it and if 20% like it, thats still a large community to play it and a lot of them will probably buy some shit from the in game store. but thats on PC, where its easy to buy shit. im skeptical about how well it will work on xbox, the whole "buy MS points, then buy shit with MSP" system might make it more difficult and make people reluctant to buy the in game shit.
